Paul HURMUZ joined the Military Academy in 1980. His military career, as a commissioned officer, started in 1983, in a SIGINT and Electronic Warfare Unit.
After attending the Staff College, he was appointed in 1992 as a Battalion Commander. He held Defence Diplomacy positions in Turkey (1994-1998) and UK (2003-2007).
From 2008 until 2013 he was the Head of Plan, Policy and International Cooperation in the Military Intelligence Directorate. He attended the National Defence College in Bucharest between January and July 2013.
Since September 2013 until September 2016, Paul HURMUZ was the Deputy Director of the Intelligence Division in the International Military Staff (NATO HQ) at a critical time for the Alliance, facing great challenges from both the Eastern and Southern flanks. He was also responsible as the Senior Military Coordinator for Joint Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (JISR) and the Chair of the NATO Geospatial Board. He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General on 1st December 2013.
In his role as the NATO Senior Military Coordinator for JISR, he ensured senior-level, cross functional coordination across the International Military Staff, Strategic Commands and NATO Agencies for this high visibility project of the Alliance.
On 2nd September 2016, he was appointed as Deputy of the State Secretary and Chief of the Defence Policy and Planning Department in the Romanian Ministry of National Defence and on 1st December 2016 he was promoted to Major General. He retired in August 2017 after 34 years of military service.
Since January 2023 he joined the New Strategy Center as a Senior Associate Expert.
