Professor Zbigniew Rau is a Polish lawyer, academic lecturer, professor of legal sciences, senator of the 6th term, voivode of Łódź in 2015-2019 and a member of the Sejm of the 9th term.
In 1977 he graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Łódź. He obtained the degree of Doctor of Laws in 1982. In 1996 he habilitated, and in 2005 he received the title of professor. He is the head of the Department of Political and Legal Doctrines and the Center for Political and Legal Thought of Alexis de Tocqueville of the University of Lodz.
Zbigniew Rau was a long-term lecturer and scholarship holder at German, Dutch, British, American and Australian universities, including: Universität Trier, Universität Gießen, International Law School, University of Limburg (Maastricht), Trinity College, Cambridge University (Cambridge), Department of Government, University of Texas at Austin, Social Philosophy and Policy Center, Bowling Green State University (Bowling Green), Hoover Institution, Stanford University (Stanford), Murphy Institute of Political Economy, Tulane University (New Orleans), Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University (Canberra).
In 1980, he joined NSZZ "Solidarność", where he was an expert in verifying the elections of the Inter-Enterprise Founding Committee of NSZZ "Solidarity" of the Lodz region.
In 2005-2007, as a senator, he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. From November 2019 to August 2020, as an MP, he was the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the chairman of the Polish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the chairman of the Polish-British Parliamentary Group.
